Costa Rica’s Ministry of Health has updated its Ministerial Resolution, now classifying entire countries as high-risk areas for yellow fever transmission, rather than specific regions. The following countries in the Americas now require yellow fever vaccination: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, French Guiana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela, and Trinidad and Tobago; along with various African countries.
A certificate of vaccination must be presented to immigration authorities when travelling from these countries. Without this certificate, passengers will not be allowed to enter the country.
A review of regulations for cruise passengers is underway to clarify specific vaccination requirements.
The vaccine is mandatory, with exceptions for:
Executive Decree No. 39997-S-G-SP-RE-REGULATIONS mandates that travel agencies, tour operators, shipping companies, and airlines ensure travellers meet this requirement before purchasing tickets. These entities must verify, before boarding, that passengers have the International Certificate of Vaccination against Yellow Fever.
A transitional period is in place, allowing travel without the vaccine until 11 January 2025. However, the Ministry of Health recommends travellers get vaccinated in preparation for this requirement.
