We are very pleased to announce that the airline GOL Linhas Aéreas will offer exclusive, regular and non-stop flights between San José and São Paulo, starting in the last quarter of 2024. This new flight between the two countries, allows Costa Rica to have a direct connection with the largest metropolis in the southern hemisphere.
Operations between the Juan Santamaría (SJO), and the Brazilian metropolis, will begin on November 12th, 2024, departing from Costa Rica at 20:40 hours and arriving in Brazil at 7:10 hours (local time) the following day. The flight from Brazil is scheduled to take off from GRU Airport at 13:55 hours, with a landing on Costa Rican soil at 18:25 hours. There will be three weekly frequencies, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
The start of direct flights between São Paulo and San Jose marks the culmination of private sector collaboration efforts with the Costa Rican Tourism Board. As of 2023, there has been a significant increase in the visitation of tourists from South America, and Brazil was the third most important market from the south of the continent.
We already predict enormous commercial success with the opening of this new air route between friend countries.
We are pleased to announce the opening of a new route between these cities in Mexico and Central America, thus strengthening the cultural and economic exchange of the region.
This new route that will connect the city of Guadalajara with San Jose will have two weekly frequencies (Tuesdays and Saturdays) and will begin operating on October 29th. The flights will be departing from San Jose at 15:32 hours, and arriving in Guadalajara at 18:47 hours. Likewise, departing from Guadalajara at 19:37 hours and arriving in San Jose at 22:52 hours.
Mexico is a crucial country in the issuance of tourists to Costa Rica, and the new Volaris route provides an important potential to increase the number of visitors to Costa Rican lands. Costa Rica is a popular destination for ecotourists and nature lovers who want to explore its unique biodiversity and wonderful beaches.
During 2023, a big number of tourists from Mexico visited Costa Rica, and many Costa Ricans traveled to Mexico by the same route. Statistics show a considerable increase in travelers between the two nations, so we believe that this new flight will contribute significantly to regional connectivity efforts.
Alaska Airlines in conjunction with the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT) are pleased to announce the start of two new routes between Guanacaste and the West Coast of the United States. Alaska Airlines will operate two new routes to Guanacaste, Costa Rica. This is the direct route from Seattle (SEA) and San Francisco (SFO) International Airports, starting December 21ST, 2024.
The frequency of operations will be weekly on Saturdays. Departure time from Seattle will be at 8:15 hours (local time), arriving in Guanacaste (LIR) at 17:15 hours, while your departure itinerary from Guanacaste will be on Sundays at 10:00 hours with arrival time in Seattle at 16:45 hours. On the other hand, the departure time from San Francisco will be at 8:00 hours (local time), arriving in Guanacaste at 16:20 hours, and the departure itinerary from Guanacaste will be on Saturdays at 17:30 hours, arriving in San Francisco at 22:35 hours.
United States is the main source for tourists to Costa Rica. The opening of these new routes is nothing more than the result of the work carried out to strengthen the strategic markets on the West Coast. These routes operated by Alaska show the enormous interest of tourists for the destination as well as their predilection for our country.

Avianca, together with the Costa Rican Tourism Institute are extremely pleased to announce to travelers the increase in frequencies on the San José – Quito – Buenos Aires (Ezeiza) route. This route will link Costa Rica and Argentina, through a brief stopover of only 1 hour in Ecuador. During this time, travelers do not need to get off the plane at Quito’s Mariscal Sucre Airport.
Starting on August 31, 2024, Avianca will increase 3 weekly frequencies to Buenos Aires via Quito. With this increase, the airline will begin to operate daily to the Argentine capital. The flight San José – Quito departs daily at 16:50 hours, arriving in Quito at 20:00 hours. The flight Quito – Buenos Aires departs at 21:15 hours, arriving in Buenos Aires at 5:05 hours. Likewise, the Buenos Aires – Quito flight departs at 06:15 hours, arriving in Quito at 10:30 hours, while the Quito – San José flight leaves at 11:55 hours, arriving in San José at 13:00 hours.
The new daily flights to the Southern Cone are part of a strategy to attract airlines or increase frequencies from the main source markets and other emerging markets from South America. This will surely result in a greater number of Argentine and South American tourists traveling to our country.
These initiatives benefit our countries, including of course, all families that depend on tourism and productive chains.
We are pleased to announce that the Costa Rican Tourism Board, along with other authorities, is making significant progress in negotiations with SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) to establish a new direct flight route from Copenhagen to San Jose.
The proposed flight will operate twice weekly (exact days and times to be determined) using an Airbus A350. The service is planned to commence during the Nordic winter season, aligning with Costa Rica’s peak travel period in 2025-2026.
In addition to the Nordic countries, this route will be particularly attractive to travelers from several northern regions of Germany and Poland.
Starting September 1st, SAS will join the SkyTeam alliance and has already established a partnership with Avianca, enhancing connectivity options for travelers.
We are optimistic that this new flight will strengthen connections between these regions and Costa Rica.
